Our monthly in-person debate series continues with our next discussion: Are large investment rounds hindering or helping PropTechs?

The last few years has seen a lot of investment come through for the PropTech industry in the UK, in 2021 Pi Labs reported there was approximately £1.6 billion of investment into the sector, a 360% increase from the £347.79 million seen in 2020. Has this investment helped companies grow and scale or has this created a false sense of security resulting in the demise of some PropTechs?

Raising investment is more than securing funds, it's a process of finding the right VC that understands your product and solution, your business goals and an alignment in ambition to achieve these goals. Companies that have previously secured funding haven't always seen success due to the lack of guidance and strategy in place on how to utilise this funding. It has also created a false perception and possible bias towards these companies leading to decisions that have hindered growth. Alternatively there are companies that have gone through successful rounds of funding and scaled over the years, so is investment ultimately helping PropTechs and how do they get it right in order to succeed?
